Bin Laden and President Obama. Fair Game for Interview Questions?
May 2nd, 2011
How do you feel about President Obama’s decision to kill Bin Laden? Or, how do you feel about our administration’s efforts against terrorism?
Today’s announced death of Bin Laden brought to mind times when I’ve coached clients on handling potentially awkward questions like those – questions having nothing to do with your fitness for the position.
How you answer such a question can make or break you. Bear in mind, the question is likely asked as part of small talk and isn’t part of a strategy to unnerve you. And typically, larger companies with a more structured interview process probably won’t ‘go there.’ It’s the smaller firms, typically where you interview with the owner, where such questions may arise.
Anything dealing with politics and religion can be sticky. If there’s a general question along the lines of, “What do you think of xxx?” you can generally acknowledge it’s a potentially contentious question since people have passionate views on both sides. I’d then ask the employer what they thought of the topic. Do your best to avoid answering.
If pushed, mention how you realize and respect how not everyone holds the same views on topics. Explain how you try your best to keep such topics away from discussions at work since it can be polarizing.
Don’t make the employer feel chastised.
